  • I'm not a big fan of classical musicians who make a big show of how they move with the music. In fact, I suspect it may make their actual playing worse. However, one practical reason to move with the music is to keep time. That's just about the most important thing a musician has to do.

  • With vibrato, do you mainly alter the amplitude (volume) of the sound or the frequency (pitch) of the note? I always thought the movement of the finger was to oscillate the pitch around a tonal center, but Mr. Ma keeps using the word "amplitude" so now I'm confused. (Pianist here.)

    MusicBlikMusicBlik9 dager siden
  • The movement can be natural as part of the expression of the music or it can be an affectation done because the player thinks they are expected to move. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference, but I recall watching a flute player who had the end of her instrument moving in a circle constantly. Fast parts, slow parts, loud parts, or soft parts, the flute moved in a circle and it wasn't even on the beat. Just random circles. Obviously an affectation. She wasn't feeling the music, just moving because she imagined that she had to move.

  • With the cello having no frets, would that make it the only instrument that can be played by any culture regardless of scales and temperament and whatnot ? Can't think of any other instrument that isn't in some way based on subdivisions or some sort of scale.
